Honoring Fathers & Alfar …. 12 Days of Yule

The fifth day of Yuletide is dedicated to the Alfar. The (Norse) term, “Alfar,” can be confusing, because it refers to both the “elves” of nature and of the souls of departed men. The day is meant to honor the male ancestors of our hearths and homes who have provided for us, taught us, comforted us, and blessed us with strength and purpose. Many people even leave out a little offering for the most well-known of the elves tonight.
My husband’s late grandfather Ivar was from Norway. He made lefse and krumkake for this holiday so we remembered him by making a batch of krumkake and by decorating a tree with little Norwegian flags. My grandfather, Edwin, was always with us and always smelled of peppermint.
All of our male ancestors have passed, but I hope wherever they are, they find a warm fire, a good pipe of tobacco, and enjoy a strong cup of coffee and a peppermint stick with friends and family that went before them….and I hope they can see all of us and take comfort the traditions they helped to create.
