2024 Vegetable Garden …. Seed Potatoes / Onions

We went on an excursion into the city this afternoon – to visit Portland Nursery for some spring supplies. I love going to this nursery every so often as their selection is much more diverse that what I can find in the town closer to our place.

We picked up a variety of onion starts that I hadn’t tried before. Blush is a cross between yellow and red onions and produces a slightly pungent onion with a touch of sweetness.

We were like kids in a candy store when we found the seed potato display. They had whites, russets, reds, purples, golds, storage potatoes, new potatoes, fingerlings – – – so many possibilities. In the end we purchased Belmonda (early to mid-season golds), Viking Purple (mid-season purple-skinned), Arizona Gold (mid-season golds), Raspberry (mid-season red-flesh) and Huckleberry Gold (late-season purple-skinned). We ended up buying 2 of each variety. We bought larger potatoes and are hoping to divide them before planting.

We also purchased 3 bags of Compost planting mix to top dress our early raised bed for Lettuce, Spinach and Swiss Chard.
